Sixteen-year-old Hattie Brooks inherits her uncle's homesteading claim in Montana in 1917 and encounters some unexpected problems related to the war in Europe. Somehow World War I and homesteading never seemed to have happened at the same time...but this marvelous story of a brave young woman who worked so hard and was influenced by world events was such a powerful book. I loved Hattie and her caring neighbors. This is historical fiction at its best!
